What this amendment would do

SA 5855 is an amendment to bill S. 4784. Its purpose is to require the Secretary of Defense to classify specific locations as places where contamination occurred and where members of the Armed Forces were exposed to toxic substances.

The amendment aims to add SEC. 358 to the bill, which includes the following changes:

  • Location Classification: The Secretary of Defense must classify the Nevada Test and Training Range (including the Nevada National Security Site) on or after January 27, 1951, and any facility on the most recent Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act of 2000 list published by the Secretary of Energy as locations where contamination occurred.

  • Identification Process: The Secretary of Defense must create a process to identify current and former members of the Armed Forces stationed at these locations. This includes allowing these individuals to provide evidence of their assignment, although the Secretary shall not require them to submit evidence.

  • Information Sharing: The Secretary of Defense must share all gathered information and documentation with the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. This is intended to help establish claims for benefits for injuries, exposures, or illnesses related to service at these facilities.
