What this amendment would do
SA 5425, submitted by Mr. Welch, aims to add a section to title IV of S. Con. Res. 33.
The purpose of this amendment is to create a point of order in the Senate. This means it would stop the consideration of any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, or conference report that allows for the detention and deportation of extended and immediate family members of U.S. veterans and military service members.
-
The only exception to this rule is if the detention is for felony violations of United States criminal law.
-
To waive or suspend this rule, or to sustain an appeal of the Chair's ruling, an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Members of the Senate is required.
