What this amendment would do
SA 5302, submitted by Mr. Peters, aims to add a section to title III of S. Con. Res. 33.
The purpose of this amendment is to create a deficit-neutral reserve fund to provide $33,900,000 in compensation to the Keewenaw Bay Indian Community.
This payment is for the taking of land by the United States without just compensation. The land is located inside the exterior boundaries of the L'Anse Indian Reservation, which was guaranteed to the community under a treaty signed in 1854.
To achieve this, the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate may:
- Revise allocations of committees or committees.
- Revise aggregates and other appropriate levels in the resolution.
- Make adjustments to the pay-as-you-go ledger for relevant bills, joint resolutions, amendments, motions, or conference reports.
The amendment specifies that the legislation must not increase the deficit between fiscal years 2026 through 2035.
