What this amendment would do
SA 5078, submitted by Mr. LUJAN, aims to add a section to title III of S. Con. Res. 33.
The purpose of this amendment is to create a deficit-neutral reserve fund for the following:
- Financing the assessment, remediation, and long-term monitoring of legacy uranium contamination.
- Focusing on abandoned mine sites that are on or adjacent to Tribal lands and in rural communities across the western United States.
- Giving priority to sites that pose the greatest risk to public health, agricultural land, and drinking water sources.
This amendment allows the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to adjust budgetary levels and the pay-as-you-go ledger for legislation related to these goals, as long as the legislation does not increase the deficit between fiscal years 2026 through 2035.
