What this amendment would do

As folks who want to keep our elected officials accountable, we need to know what our lawmakers are trying to do with our hard-earned money and healthcare. This amendment, labeled SA 493 and put forward by Ms. Cortez Masto along with a few other Senators, is all about protecting seniors and people with disabilities who rely on Medicare.

What the amendment adds to the bill

  • It creates a new rule in the Senate called a point of order.

  • This rule stops the Senate from considering any bill, resolution, motion, amendment, or conference report that increases cost-sharing or out-of-pocket expenses for prescription drug coverage under Medicare.

  • To get around this rule and pass something that raises these costs anyway, it would take a large three-fifths vote of the Senators chosen and sworn. That same three-fifths vote is also needed to overrule the Chair if a question is raised about this rule.
