What this amendment would do

As folks who rely on our elected officials to keep things straight, we need to know what is being pushed in Congress. This amendment, labeled SA 472 and submitted by Mr. Schatz, is all about protecting our rural hospitals from losing federal funding.

What It Aims to Change

  • Adds a Point of Order: It creates a specific rule in the Senate that stops lawmakers from considering any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, or conference report that reduces federally financed payments to rural hospitals.

  • Sets High Hurdles for Waivers: If the Senate wants to ignore this rule and pass something that harms these payments anyway, it takes a three-fifths vote of all chosen and sworn members to waive it or to win an appeal against the Chair's ruling.
