What this amendment would do

This amendment, known as the No Settlements for January 6 Law Enforcement Assaulters Act, aims to stop Federal funds from being used for legal settlements given to certain people.

Specifically, it adds a limitation to ensure no Federal money, including funds from the Judgment Fund, is spent on legal settlements for a covered individual.

A covered individual is defined as someone convicted of assaulting a law enforcement officer in connection with the events at or near the Capitol on January 6, 2021. This includes violations of section 111 of title 18, United States Code, or section 432 of the Revised Statutes of the District of Columbia.

The restriction applies if the settlement claims are based on alleged harm the person suffered:

  • During the events at or near the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
  • From prosecution for an offense relating to those events.
