What this amendment would do
SA 3923, submitted by Mr. Merkley and Mr. Wyden, aims to add a new section to the bill regarding the identification of Federal law enforcement officers engaged in crowd control.
The purpose of this amendment is to require certain individuals to show who they are while performing specific duties. The key changes include:
-
Required Identification: Any Federal law enforcement officer or member of an armed force performing crowd control, riot control, or the arrest or detainment of people in acts of civil disobedience, protests, demonstrations, or riots must clearly display:
- For Federal law enforcement officers: Their Federal agency and last name or unique identifier.
- For members of an armed force: Their service branch and last name or unique identifier.
-
Prohibition on Concealment: Officers and members of an armed force are forbidden from taping over, obscuring, or concealing this identifying information while performing these activities.
-
Clarification of Authority: The amendment states it does not give members of an armed force any new authority to perform law enforcement activities.
