What this amendment would do
SA 3897, submitted by Mr. Booker, aims to add "Law Enforcement Officer Suitability and Fitness Requirements" to the bill.
The purpose of this amendment is to require Federal agencies to conduct a Moderate Risk Public Trust Background Investigation for any applicant before they are hired as a law enforcement officer.
The amendment establishes specific reasons why an applicant would be ineligible for employment, including:
-
Membership in or affiliation with extremist organizations, such as white supremacist or anti-government groups, that advocate for terrorism, violence, or the forceful overthrow of the U.S. Government.
-
Involvement in or past convictions for conspiracies to overthrow the Government of the United States or the obstruction of Congress.
-
Involvement in the planning of, or past convictions for, specific acts under sections 1512(c)(2) or 2383 of title 18, United States Code.
The amendment also states that nothing in the section should be interpreted to impact or infringe upon First Amendment protections.
