What this amendment would do
This amendment, submitted by Mr. Hickenlooper and Mr. Tuberville, aims to add a section to title XV of bill S. 2296. Its purpose is to require the Secretary of Defense to assess the funding needs for creating a dedicated logistics layer to support the Golden Dome for America missile defense architecture.
The goal is to ensure these on-orbit operations are effective, resilient, and sustained. The Secretary must evaluate options that provide the following:
- Extension of the operational lifespan of assets.
- Reduced risk in congested orbital regimes.
- Rapid repositioning and deployment of sensors and interceptors.
- Support for clearing space debris.
- A cost-effective architecture for refueling in space.
- In-orbit servicing, refueling, and sustainment to maintain operational readiness and coverage of the interceptor constellation.
The Secretary of Defense must submit a report with these findings to the congressional defense committees by March 1, 2026.
