What this amendment would do

SA 3799, submitted by Mr. Hawley, aims to add a section to the bill regarding health care services at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

The purpose of this amendment is to require the Secretary of Defense, working with the Secretary of the Army, to conduct an assessment of whether health care services for TRICARE beneficiaries at Fort Leonard Wood are adequate.

  • The assessment must evaluate local access to care, the impact of realigning, downgrading, or reducing services at the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital, and the potential for more partnerships with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The amendment also prohibits the Secretary of Defense from closing, downgrading, or reducing the scope of care at the hospital unless specific conditions are met:

  • The assessment must be completed and delivered to the House and Senate Committees on Armed Services.
  • The Secretary must certify that changes would not reduce or degrade health care for beneficiaries and the local community.
  • The Chief of Staff of the Army must certify that there will be no degradation of medical readiness for units assigned to Fort Leonard Wood.
