What this amendment would do
SA 3760, submitted by Ms. Lummis and Mr. Barrasso, aims to add a section to bill S. 2296 regarding the remediation and resource recovery at defense-related uranium mine sites.
The purpose of this amendment is to have the Secretary of Energy, working with the Secretary of Defense, find and test advanced technologies that can:
- Fix environmental hazards at defense-related uranium mine sites at no cost to the Federal Government.
- Recover uranium and other critical minerals for energy purposes or national security.
The amendment requires the Secretary of Energy to deploy technologies approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at at least 3 defense-related uranium mine sites by September 30, 2026.
The Secretary of Energy must prioritize systems that do not use subsurface excavation, explosives, or chemical reagents, and that allow for the recovery of minerals for civilian energy markets or the national nuclear fuel cycle. Additionally, the Secretary of Energy can set terms to ensure safety, health, and environmental standards are met.
