What this amendment would do

As folks who sent us to Washington to look out for your everyday needs, we need to keep a close eye on how tax rules are written. This amendment, labeled SA 371 and put forward by Ms. Cortez Masto along with a few of her colleagues, is all about stopping new tax burdens on the things we rely on every single day.

What the Amendment Changes

  • Blocks Import Tax Hikes: The amendment creates a point of order in the Senate to stop the consideration of legislation that raises the rate of duty on food, energy, or pharmaceutical goods brought into the United States from an ally country, specifically if that money is used to decrease taxes on the wealthy.

  • Sets High Hurdles for Waivers: To bypass this rule and allow such a bill to move forward, it would take a three-fifths affirmative vote of the sworn Senators. It also takes that same three-fifths vote to sustain an appeal if the Chair rules against the point of order.
