What this amendment would do
SA 3639, submitted by Mrs. Shaheen, aims to add a new section to bill S. 2296. The purpose of this addition is to require a report analyzing the use of long-acting injectable preventative malaria medication.
The amendment requires the Secretary of State and the Commander of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research to provide a report to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs within 180 days of the Act's enactment.
The report must analyze the following:
-
The use of this medication through the Department of Defense's Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring and Research Program and the Department of State's Office of Infectious Diseases and Outbreak Response of the Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy.
-
Which programs within the President's Malaria Initiative would benefit from using the medication.
-
How the Department of Defense and Department of State use the medication for members of the Armed Forces and diplomats serving in areas where malaria is endemic.
