What this amendment would do
This amendment, known as the Taiwan International Solidarity Act, aims to add a new section to the bill to modify the Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative (TAIPEI) Act of 2019.
The purpose of this amendment is to:
-
Clarify United Nations Resolution 2758: It states that while the resolution established the People's Republic of China as the only lawful representatives of China to the United Nations, it did not address Taiwan's representation in the UN or related organizations, nor did it take a position on Taiwan's sovereignty or the relationship between the People's Republic of China and Taiwan.
-
State U.S. Opposition to Status Changes: It adds that the United States opposes any initiative to change the status of Taiwan without the consent of the people of Taiwan.
-
Advocate in International Organizations: It instructs U.S. government representatives in certain organizations to use their voice, vote, and influence to resist efforts by the People's Republic of China to distort policies, procedures, language, or decisions regarding Taiwan.
-
Oppose Undermining Ties: It encourages U.S. allies and partners to oppose efforts by the People's Republic of China to undermine Taiwan's partnerships and official diplomatic relationships.
-
Expand Reporting: It requires reports to include information regarding ongoing or prior attempts by the People's Republic of China to undermine Taiwan's relationships with other countries and its observer status or membership in specific organizations.
