What this amendment would do
SA 3464, submitted by Mr. Merkley, aims to add a new section to bill S. 2296. This addition requires the Secretary of Defense to provide a report regarding the use of the chemical 6PPD (N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine) in the design and production of tires bought by the Department of Defense.
The purpose of this amendment is to ensure the following information is reported to the Committees on Armed Services of the Senate and the House of Representatives within 180 days after the Act is enacted:
- The use of 6PPD in tires procured by the Department of Defense.
- A list of any Department of Defense initiatives that are researching potential alternatives to 6PPD in the production of tires.
