What this amendment would do
SA 3338, submitted by Mr. Scott of South Carolina and other members, aims to add a new section to bill S. 2296. The purpose of this addition is the repeal of the sunset of the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996.
The amendment is based on the following:
-
Findings: Congress finds that the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 requires sanctions regarding Iran's support for terrorism, the Revolutionary Guards Corps, and its illicit weapons programs, including ballistic missile development. It also notes that Iran is providing financial support and weapons to terrorist proxies in the Middle East and has acquired destabilizing weapons from other malign actors and the Russian Federation, threatening United States partners and allies like Israel.
-
Policy: The amendment states that the policy of the United States is to fully enforce and implement the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996.
-
Changes: The amendment changes the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 by striking the "sunset" from the section heading, removing the "Effective Date" section, and striking subsection (b).
