What this amendment would do

SA 3227, submitted by Mr. Curtis, aims to add a section to bill S. 2296 regarding a Report on Specially Vetted Units.

The purpose of this amendment is to establish the following:

  • Sense of Congress: It states that Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Vetted Units and Sensitive Investigative Units are critical for dismantling and disrupting international trafficking networks and production of fentanyl.

  • DEA Report: The Administrator of the DEA, working with the Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense, must submit a report within 180 days of the Act's enactment. This report must include:

    • An assessment of how effective these units are, specifically in the Tri-Border Area of South America, the Northern Triangle of Central America, and the United Mexican States.
    • Recommendations to improve the program and suggestions for expanding it to other jurisdictions.
  • Comptroller General Report: Within 180 days after the DEA report is submitted, the Comptroller General of the United States must provide a report reviewing those recommendations and assessments.
