What this amendment would do
This is SA 316, proposed by Mr. Schiff along with several other senators to the concurrent resolution for the congressional budget. Common sense tells us we need to keep our firefighters supported, and this amendment lets us hold officials accountable for how they fund these critical workers.
-
The purpose of this amendment is to create a deficit-neutral reserve fund that relates to supporting Federal wildland firefighters and associated personnel.
-
It aims to allow the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to revise allocations, aggregates, and other appropriate levels, and make adjustments to the pay-as-you-go ledger.
-
These changes are for legislation relating to supporting Federal wildland firefighters or other Federal personnel necessary for hazardous fuels management and community wildfire resilience.
-
The added provisions may include recruiting and retaining personnel, paying them a fair wage, providing industry-standard leave policies following wildfire deployments, supporting their health and wellbeing, exempting them from hiring freezes, or reinstating the employment of personnel whose positions were terminated during calendar year 2025.
-
All of this is allowed as long as the legislation does not increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.

A vote on one change, not on the bill. A bill can collect dozens of these, and losing one does not stop it.
