What this amendment would do
SA 3141, submitted by Mrs. Murray and Mr. Sullivan, aims to add a new section to bill S. 2296 regarding reports on support for families of members of the Armed Forces who died in non-combat military plane crashes.
The amendment requires the Secretary of Defense to provide two reports to Congress within one year of the Act's enactment:
-
Report on Non-combat Military Plane Crashes: A report on all crashes categorized as "Operational Loss/Non-War Loss," using Department of Defense records starting in 1984 and information from other organizations for crashes before 1984.
-
Report on Outreach to Families: A report on the assistance provided to families of those who died in these crashes. This includes outreach to ensure families are aware of and have access to Department of Defense benefits, resources, and support services. It also covers personalized guidance for applying for services like counseling, financial assistance, and survivor benefits, as well as connecting families with peer support networks.
The Secretary of Defense is allowed to consult with expert organizations while preparing these reports.
