What this amendment would do
Mr. Kaine submitted amendment SA 292 to set up a rule in the Senate regarding the school meals program. We need to hold our officials accountable and make sure our kids are fed, and this amendment is designed to stop legislation that would mess with school food access.
What It Aims to Change or Add
- It adds a new point of order in the Senate against any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report.
- It targets changes to the relevant percentage for community eligibility under the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act.
- It stops any changes that would leave millions of children without access to nutritious food during school hours.
- It sets a rule that this point of order can only be waived or suspended in the Senate by an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Members, duly chosen and sworn.
- It requires an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Members of the Senate, duly chosen and sworn, to sustain an appeal of the ruling of the Chair on this point of order.
