What this amendment would do
This amendment, submitted by Mr. Lee, is about holding our officials accountable regarding the statutory debt limit and deficit reduction. It aims to change the instructions given to the Senate Committee on Finance.
Here is what the amendment specifically aims to change or add to the bill:
-
It requires the Senate Committee on Finance to report changes in laws that increase the statutory debt limit by not more than $2,000,000,000,000 no later than May 16, 2025.
-
It adds a section that adjusts this debt limit increase based on whether spending cuts of at least $2,000,000,000,000 are actually achieved.
-
If Senate committees do not achieve at least $2,000,000,000,000 in net deficit reduction over the fiscal years 2025 through 2034, the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate will reduce the Finance Committee's debt limit increase instruction by the difference.
-
If Senate committees achieve at least $2,000,000,000,000 in net deficit reduction over the fiscal years 2025 through 2034, the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate will increase the Finance Committee's debt limit instruction by the difference.
-
It requires the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to provide a written certification using cost estimates from the Congressional Budget Office and the Joint Committee on Taxation before any adjustment to the debt limit instruction can be made.
