What this amendment would do
Mr. Booker submitted amendment numbered SA 2172 to the concurrent resolution H. Con. Res. 14 for the fiscal year 2025 budget. Common sense tells us that when we vote for public officials, we expect them to be held accountable for making sure our government services actually work for working people. This amendment sets up a deficit-neutral reserve fund relating to protecting the retirement funds of working people.
The Purpose and Changes
The purpose of this amendment is to allow the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget to revise allocations, aggregates, and other appropriate levels in the resolution. It also allows the Chairman to make adjustments to the pay-as-you-go ledger for bills, joint resolutions, amendments, motions, or conference reports.
The text explicitly states that these changes aim to protect the retirement funds of working people by:
-
Reversing staffing cuts to the Social Security Administration.
-
Preventing the closure of field offices and other policy changes that make the Social Security Administration less accessible.
-
Ensuring taxpayers' Social Security claims are processed in a timely manner.
The only condition provided in the text is that this legislation must not increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
