What this amendment would do
Here is the straight talk on what this amendment is all about. Senator Markey put forward SA 2140, which is meant to protect everyday people from paying more for their power.
-
The amendment creates a point of order in the Senate against any legislation, resolution, motion, or report that would cause a projected increase in household energy costs due to changes in offshore wind subsidies, permitting, or leasing.
-
If someone tries to pass a measure that fits this description, any Senator can raise an objection to stop it.
-
To get around this rule and pass the measure anyway, it would take a three-fifths vote of the Senate. It also takes that same three-fifths vote to override a ruling by the Chair on this matter.
