What this amendment would do
As folks keeping an eye out for the everyday people, we need to know what our elected officials are trying to do with our laws. Ms. Warren, along with Mr. Markey, submitted this amendment to block funding for certain government actions against Massachusetts residents.
Here is what this amendment aims to change and add to the budget bill:
- It creates a point of order in the Senate, which is basically a rule to stop Congress from considering legislation that funds the arrest or detention of Massachusetts residents legally in the U.S. just because they peacefully expressed their political views.
- It stops funding for transporting a Massachusetts resident across state lines or deporting them when it violates a Federal court order.
- It blocks funding for revoking visas or taking away green cards based on a Massachusetts resident peacefully sharing their political views.
- It sets a strict rule that this ban can only be waived, or a ruling on it overturned, if three-fifths of the Senators vote to do so.
