What this amendment would do
Mr. Bennet submitted amendment SA 1969 to hold our officials accountable and ensure our priorities are straight. The purpose of this amendment is to add a point of order against giving tax cuts to the wealthy while kids in our country are still going hungry.
Here is what the amendment aims to change or add to the bill:
-
It creates a rule in the Senate where it is out of order to consider any legislation that cuts taxes for taxpayers making an adjusted gross income greater than $1,000,000.
-
This restriction applies if the percentage of households with children who are food insecure, as defined by the United States Department of Agriculture, stays historically high.
-
It states that this new rule can only be waived or suspended, and a ruling of the Chair on a point of order can only be sustained, by an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Senators duly chosen and sworn.
