What this amendment would do

Mr. Bennet submitted SA 1968 to hold our elected officials accountable when it comes to prioritizing our children's education over tax breaks for the wealthy. As folks who sent these officials to Washington, we need to know what they are trying to change in the budget resolution.

What The Amendment Aims To Do

  • Adds a new rule: It creates a point of order in the Senate against legislation that cuts taxes for taxpayers with an adjusted gross income greater than $1,000,000.

  • The condition: This tax cut block applies if the percentage of eighth graders who have below basic reading skills, according to the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress results, remains historically high.

  • How to bypass the rule: This rule can only be waived, suspended, or an appeal of the Chair's ruling sustained by an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Senators duly chosen and sworn.
