What this amendment would do

As folks who elect our officials, we need to know what our lawmakers are trying to do with our budget. Mr. King submitted SA 1854, which creates a deficit-neutral reserve fund relating to helping fire departments.

In plain English, this amendment allows the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget to change budget levels and adjust the pay-as-you-go ledger for specific legislation. What is that legislation supposed to do? It aims to add support for:

  • Providing critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and fire-related hazards.
  • Safeguarding the staffing for adequate fire and emergency response grants under section 34 of the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974.
  • Helping fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations increase or maintain the number of trained, front line firefighters available in their communities.

The big catch here to keep our elected officials accountable is that any legislation doing this would not increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
