What this amendment would do

As folks who rely on our elected officials to do right by us, we need to keep a close eye on how our government handles emergencies. Mr. King submitted an amendment, numbered SA 1853, which is all about protecting the funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, known as FEMA.

  • The purpose of this amendment is to create a point of order in the Senate against cutting disaster spending.

  • It aims to stop the Senate from considering any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that would reduce funding to or eliminate FEMA.

  • It sets a strict rule that this protection can only be waived or suspended, and a ruling of the Chair can only be appealed, by a three-fifths affirmative vote of the sworn Members of the Senate.
