What this amendment would do

As folks who rely on our elected officials to do the right thing, we need to keep a close eye on how our government handles past mistakes. Mr. Lujan submitted amendment SA 1714, which proposes setting up a deficit-neutral reserve fund.

What It Aims to Change or Add

This amendment adds a specific focus to the congressional budget. It allows the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to make adjustments and revisions for legislation that provides justice and compensation to certain Americans.

Specifically, it aims to help people in the United States who were sickened by radiation exposure from above-ground nuclear weapons testing across the western United States and Pacific islands. It also aims to help those who were sickened by radiation while working in the uranium mining industry during the Cold War.

The catch here is that any bills or measures passed for this purpose cannot increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
