What this amendment would do

As folks who care about holding our elected officials accountable, we need to know what our lawmakers are trying to do with our budget. Mr. Reed submitted an amendment, known as SA 1691, for the concurrent resolution H. Con. Res. 14.

What the amendment aims to change or add

This amendment adds a deficit-neutral reserve fund to the budget. Put simply, it gives the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget the power to change financial allocations and levels if a new bill comes along that focuses on specific goals.

Specifically, this addition aims to support legislation that does the following:

  • Protects veterans and servicemembers from being scammed by financial institutions.

  • Supports the work of the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection.

The catch here is common sense: any new legislation for these purposes must not increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
