What this amendment would do
-
The amendment, designated as SA 1625 and submitted by Ms. Hirono, creates a point of order in the Senate against specific legislation.
-
It targets any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that tries to save money by reducing staff at the Department of Labor if that staff reduction harms the department's ability to inspect worksites for dangerous conditions or child labor law violations.
-
If someone raises this point of order, it stops the Senate from considering that legislation unless a three-fifths vote of the sworn Senators agrees to waive or suspend the rule.
-
A three-fifths vote is also required to override a ruling by the Chair regarding this point of order.
