What this amendment would do
Mr. Coons, along with Senators Warren and Blunt Rochester, put forward an amendment numbered SA 1600. The purpose of this amendment is to set up a deficit-neutral reserve fund that relates to protecting Social Security from DOGE.
What It Aims to Change
This amendment allows the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to make changes to committee allocations, aggregates, and other levels. It also lets the Chairman adjust the pay-as-you-go ledger for certain bills or amendments.
To make these changes happen, the legislation must relate to protecting Social Security. This can include stopping the Department of Governmental Efficiency's efforts from doing the following:
-
Inhibiting Social Security beneficiaries from accessing their hard-earned benefits
-
Cutting the budget of the Social Security Administration
-
Closing Social Security Administration offices
-
Firing Social Security Administration employees
-
Forcing beneficiaries to go to unreasonable lengths to access their benefits
The amendment specifies that any legislation for these purposes must not increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
