What this amendment would do

Mr. King submitted an amendment numbered SA 1559. Its purpose is to hold our officials accountable by creating a point of order in the Senate against certain legislative actions.

What it aims to change or add

This amendment aims to add a rule to the Senate. Under this new rule, it will not be in order in the Senate to consider any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that would reduce health insurance access and affordability for individuals based on their occupation.

The only exception is if legislation is enacted to provide comparable benefits and protections for those individuals.

To bypass this rule, a waiver and appeal process is set up. Subsection (a) may only be waived or suspended in the Senate by an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Members, duly chosen and sworn. Furthermore, an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Members of the Senate, duly chosen and sworn, is required to sustain an appeal of the ruling of the Chair on a point of order raised under subsection (a).
