What this amendment would do
-
Mr. Welch submitted SA 1485, which is an amendment meant to be proposed to the concurrent resolution H. Con. Res. 14 for the fiscal year 2025 budget.
-
The main goal of this amendment is to protect the people by setting up a point of order in the Senate.
-
Simply put, it aims to stop the Senate from considering any legislation, resolution, motion, or conference report that would allow affiliates of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to access the personally identifiable information of Social Security beneficiaries.
How It Works and Accountability
-
If someone tries to pass a measure giving DOGE access to your private Social Security information, a Senator can raise a point of order against it.
-
To bypass this protection and allow access anyway, our elected officials would have to vote for a waiver or suspension.
-
It would take an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Senators chosen and sworn to override the rule or to sustain an appeal against the Chair's ruling, ensuring we can hold our officials accountable for protecting your personal data.
