What this amendment would do
As folks who vote for our officials, we need to keep a close eye on how things get done in Washington. This amendment, submitted by Ms. Rosen as SA 1404 to the concurrent resolution H. Con. Res. 14, is all about keeping our government accountable when it comes to the time people have to wait for visas.
What it Aims to Change or Add
-
Adds a Point of Order: It creates a rule in the Senate where it is not in order to consider certain reconciliation bills, joint resolutions, amendments, or conference reports if they would increase visa wait times.
-
Includes Staff Reductions: The increase in visa wait times mentioned can include reductions in force at the Department of State.
-
Sets Waiver and Appeal Rules: This new rule can only be waived or suspended in the Senate by a three-fifths vote of the Members who are duly chosen and sworn. It also takes a three-fifths vote of the Members to sustain an appeal of the ruling of the Chair on a point of order raised under this rule.
