What this amendment would do
-
What the amendment does: It lets the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget change certain funding numbers and adjustments if a bill is passed that stops the government from taking back, cutting, or moving money away from Department of Agriculture programs that give food or money to emergency feeding organizations like food banks, food pantries, and food rescue programs.
-
When it applies: This protection for food assistance programs kicks in during any fiscal year when the national or state-level food insecurity rate goes up, based on the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement.
-
The main rule: Any legislation doing this has to stay deficit-neutral, meaning it cannot increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
