What this amendment would do
As folks working for you in Congress, we need to keep a close eye on how our elected officials handle our kids' futures. This amendment, submitted by Ms. Hirono and Mr. Peters, is all about protecting the money that goes to help students with disabilities.
Here is what it aims to do:
-
It creates a point of order in the Senate against any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, or conference report that would reduce Federal funding under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act for programs serving students with disabilities.
-
It sets a strict rule that this protection can only be waived or suspended, or an appeal of the Chair's ruling sustained, by an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Senators duly chosen and sworn.
