What this amendment would do
As folks who want to make sure our elected officials are doing right by us, we need to keep a close eye on school funding. This amendment, submitted by Ms. Hirono and Mr. Peters, sets up a new rule in the Senate to protect our schools.
What It Aims to Change
-
Adds a Point of Order: It creates a rule in the Senate where lawmakers cannot easily consider any bill, resolution, motion, or amendment that reduces Federal funding for schools that get money under part A of title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.
-
Requires a High Vote to Overrule: If someone tries to pass a bill that cuts this funding, it takes a three-fifths vote of all the chosen and sworn Senators to waive the rule or to win an appeal against the Chair's ruling.
