What this amendment would do
As folks looking out for the hard-working people of this country, we need to keep a close eye on how our elected officials handle our private information. Mr. Peters submitted this amendment, numbered SA 1325, to the concurrent resolution on the congressional budget for fiscal year 2025.
The purpose of this amendment is to add a deficit-neutral reserve fund related to the protection of Americans' personal or proprietary information. In plain English, it allows the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget to change budget allocations and adjustments for legislation that protects the personal information of individuals of the United States, as long as that legislation does not increase the deficit between fiscal years 2025 and 2034.
What It Changes or Adds to the Bill
This amendment adds a new section to title III of the budget resolution. Specifically, it aims to ensure two main things:
-
Making sure personally identifiable information—such as biometrics, health records, tax records, or other information in Government systems—is not accessed for any purpose other than the purpose for which it was collected.
-
Ensuring that an individual working as an employee of or under the mission of the Department of Government Efficiency shall not alter, manipulate, exfiltrate, or use such data for personal, financial, or private sector gain.
