What this bill would do
This bill is called the ``Protecting Florida's Offshore Military Readiness Act''. It was introduced in the Senate by Mr. Scott of Florida for himself and Mrs. Moody. The bill stops new oil and gas leasing, preleasing, production, and related activities in a specific area. That area is the Eglin Gulf Test and Training Range. The stop is called a moratorium and starts on the date of enactment. Valid existing leases that are already in effect when the bill is enacted will not be affected. The moratorium ends when the Secretary of War submits a certification to Congress saying the range is not of critical use.

Who it would affect, and how
Potential Positive Impacts for People
- Protection of Military Readiness: Section 2 adds a new subsection to the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act of 2006. Subsection (d)(1) stops the Secretary from offering areas in the Eglin Gulf Test and Training Range for oil and gas leasing, preleasing, production, or related activities. This could be positive because it keeps oil and gas operations out of a designated testing and training range.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
- Limitations on New Oil and Gas Development: Section 2 adds subsection (d)(1), which puts a halt on new oil and gas leasing, preleasing, production, and related activities in the Eglin Gulf Test and Training Range. This could be viewed as a negative outcome or burden by individuals or groups looking to start new oil and gas development projects in that specific range.
