What this bill would do
This bill is called the Student Voter Data Protection Act. It stops colleges and universities from sharing a student's personal information for measuring voter registration or voting rates unless the student gives written consent first. It also stops colleges from selling a student's personal education records or directory information without that same written consent. If a school breaks these rules, they will lose their federal funding.

Potential Positive Impacts for People
-
Protection of Student Privacy Regarding Voting Data: Under Section 2, colleges cannot disclose a student's personal information to measure voter registration or voting rates without the student's prior, informed, written consent. This is a positive for people because it stops the sharing of private student data for these specific purposes unless the student explicitly agrees.
-
Ban on Selling Student Information: Under Section 3, postsecondary educational institutions are prohibited from selling a student's personally identifiable education records, including directory information, without the student's prior, informed, written consent. This is a positive for individuals because it prevents schools from cashing in on a student's private information without their permission.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
- Risk of Losing Federal Funds: Under Section 2 and Section 3, educational institutions will lose their program funding if they disclose student data for voter measuring or sell student directory information without written consent. While this holds officials accountable, it could potentially impact the overall operations of a school if funding is stripped, which might indirectly burden the students who rely on those programs.
