What this bill would do
The Advanced Weather Model Computing Development Act directs the Secretary of Energy and the Administrator of NOAA to work together on research to improve weather models. This involves using advanced computing techniques like artificial intelligence and high-performance computing to advance weather, seasonal, and climate predictions. The agencies will establish a formal agreement to conduct collaborative research and may establish up to three centers of excellence at National Laboratories. The initiative includes proof of concept scenarios to compare new models against current ones. Both the Secretary and the Administrator are required to submit reports to Congress regarding their progress and achievements. The specific authority for the computing research initiative is set to expire five years after the Act is enacted.
