What this bill would do
The Advancing Research in Nuclear Fuel Recycling Act of 2025 directs the Secretary of Energy to conduct a comprehensive study on new technologies and opportunities for recycling spent nuclear fuel. This study aims to analyze the practicability, benefits, costs, and risks associated with converting nuclear waste into usable fuel for various applications. It also examines the technical and economic feasibility of extracting isotopes for medical, industrial, and space-based uses. Additionally, the study looks at the potential for collocating recycling facilities with other nuclear facilities and assessing different siting approaches. The Secretary is also tasked with identifying parties impacted by current temporary storage practices and identifying regulatory gaps. Finally, a public report summarizing these findings must be submitted to Congress within one year.
