What this bill would do
The Mortgage Relief for Disaster Survivors Act aims to provide forbearance assistance to borrowers during major disasters or emergencies. It allows borrowers with covered mortgage loans in a disaster area to request a pause on their payments. This applies to Federally backed mortgage loans and multifamily mortgage loans. Once a request is made and a financial hardship is affirmed, the servicer must grant a 180-day forbearance. Borrowers also have the option to request an extension of up to an additional 180 days. This provision applies to disasters declared on or after January 1, 2025.
