Potential Positive Impacts for People
-
This bill requires a report that assesses how the national debt impacts things like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid (Section 2(b)(1)(C)(iv)). This is a positive because it could help Congress understand if the debt is putting these important programs at risk.
-
The bill also asks for ways to reduce the national debt (Section 2(b)(3)). If the government takes action and reduces the national debt, that could help our economy and protect important programs for the future.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
- The bill calls for an assessment of how the national debt affects defense spending (Section 2(b)(1)(A)). It also assesses how the debt could crowd out spending on national security, diplomacy, and public investments to address economic challenges (Section 2(b)(2)). It is possible that as a result of this bill, there could be less spending on public investments that could help regular people.
