What this bill would do

This bill is called the Protecting Columbia River Salmon Act of 2026. It allows certain Indian Tribes with ancestral ties to the area to intentionally kill California sea lions and Steller sea lions in specific parts of the Columbia River. The bill states that these tribes can carry out the lethal take without limits on the number of animals taken or when they can be taken. Tribes can also designate other persons to carry out the lethal take on their behalf. The bill makes these changes by amending the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.
