What this bill would do
The "Study and Assessment of Future Ecosystems for Manatees Act," or "SAFE for Manatees Act," requires the Secretary of the Interior to study alternative habitats for manatees. This focuses on manatees in Florida that use coastal industrial sites that will be decommissioned, which will change water temperatures. The Secretary must identify natural warm water locations and areas for artificial warm water refugia. The process includes developing construction plans for artificial refugia with the Secretary of the Army. The Secretary must coordinate with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. A public report on the study results is required within 180 days of the Act's enactment.
