What this bill would do

The Improving Travel for American Families Act allows the TSA Administrator to establish a pilot program to speed up security screening for adults and children twelve years of age and under. This program aims to make travel easier for these passengers at selected airports. The Administrator must ensure that security protocols are not compromised and that all passengers are screened according to their Secure Flight status. Airports will be chosen based on passenger volume of families and the ability to provide adequate space and staff. The Administrator is required to brief specific Congressional committees on the program within 270 days of starting it. This pilot program is set to last for a period of two years.

What Congress actually voted on

One recorded vote has been taken on this bill.

  • The House: a fast-track vote, needing two-thirds to passPassed 398–12

The House sets aside its normal procedure to move quickly: no amendments, little debate, and a two-thirds bar instead of a simple majority. It is used for measures expected to be uncontroversial, so a bill that fails here failed despite broad expectations that it would not.
