What this bill would do

This bill, known as the "Respecting Every Claimant's appeal Options Now Act" or the "RECON Act," proposes changes to the Social Security Act. It aims to amend titles II and XVI to make the reconsideration review process optional. Under this proposal, the Commissioner would provide a hearing upon a person's request regarding an initial decision. The Commissioner would no longer be allowed to require a reconsideration of that initial decision before the hearing takes place. These changes would apply to decisions made at least one year after the act is enacted.
